Chinese New Year and Russian Maslenitsa

12In the midst of the pancake week the Institute of Education and Psychology held a remarkable Chun Jie event, which means Chinese New Year; it was organized by students of IEP, including Chinese first-year students who came to Petrozavodsk from distant Shanghai. The lecturers of the Institute and the Linguistic Centre took part in entertaining quest, during which they not only learned the Chinese New Year traditions, but also tried themselves as the creators of a holiday card, folk dance performers and even theatre actors. The culmination of the event was the collective performance of the New Year song in Chinese.
On Friday, February 16th, the Linguistic Centre of PetrSU picked up the torch, inviting foreign students to the Maslenitsa tea party with blinis (Russian pancakes). Students from China, Canada and Europe learned what Maslenitsa means, its history and customs. Lecturers and staff of the Linguistic Centre also organized funny games, for example performance of the national “chastushkas”. It was the first and unforgettable experience for international students, which familiarized them with the Russian national culture. No one stayed away. Creation of the Maslenitsa scarecrow was the last task of the program, and it showed that the guys knew how to work together amicably and with plenty of zing. All students got the prizes (books with Russian fairy tales) for active participation.
Such kind of events and meetings held in friendly atmosphere and based on mutual sincere interest, not only broaden the horizons of the participants, but also undoubtedly bring people together of different cultures and nationalities. All the freshmen of IEP are proud to tell that they study in an international group and it allows them to learn new cultures and make new friends.
